Our school currently serves 521 students. The attendance rate at the school is 96.73 percent. Student enrollment includes a variety of ethnic backgrounds; Asian 7 percent, Pacific Islander 1 percent, Filipino 1 percent, Hispanic 80 percent, African American 6 percent, Caucasian 3 percent and multiple 2 percent.
The school has 21 regular education teachers, one reading intervention teacher, one special education teacher, and two administrators. Other certificated personnel serving the school include, a psychologist and a speech and language therapist. Support staff includes a guidance intern, a case manager, six instructional aides, and two health assistants
“Research shows that the single most important determinant of what students learn is the expertise of the teacher.” (Darling-Hammond, 1998) All certificated staff meet the credential requirements of the State of California, including those to meet the needs of language learners. The majority of teachers hold advanced degrees, and all have pursued course work beyond their bachelor’s degree.
Our staff is guided by a shared commitment to educate all students to reach their fullest potential. We are dedicated to the recognition of the unique value of each person and the inspiration of each student to give his/her personal best effort to achieve individual success at school.
To assist with this endeavor, Baxter provides a comprehensive intervention program for students who need extra support. Classes are offered before, during and after school. Accelerated opportunities in math are provided to prepare our students to achieve success in advanced mathematics courses. To differentiate for the needs of gifted students, extended learning activities are offered during and after school. Homework and enrichment opportunities are provided through the APPLE Program after school.
Academic success flourishes at Baxter in an atmosphere where students feel valued, safe and accepted. Our school policies encourage involvement of students, parents, and staff and create a culture of respect and collaboration.
